"Where the Streets Have No Name"
Without a doubt, U2 was the greatest rock and roll band in the world in 1987. I simply can't believe it's been nearly twenty years....Is that possible? '87 was the year the group released their greatest album, The Joshua Tree. A month after its release, they appeared on the cover of Time, which was a big deal back then:

This was when a U2 concert was something just barely short of a religious experience. The opening song on the play list for the tour was "Where the Streets Have No Name," which we discovered this week was Tony Blair's favorite U2 song. Here is their performance of it at Sun Devil Stadium, as documented in 1988's Rattle and Hum:

Saw that tour in Baton Rouge on Thanksgiving day. The National Park (Joshua Tree) is equally spectacular.
ReplyDeleteI almost went to the Houston show. I did happen to catch them when they were doing their Unforgettable Fire tour.

ReplyDeletecheryl, I know. How does that work? I think I've actually gotten younger...
