Bring back Billy Beer!!

bring back billy beer!!
lolz

Between Nacogdoches and Lufkin, Highway 59 South, around Redland. No trace of the person or organization behind it anywhere on the sign itself (that's weird).

Seeing signs in Austin

The Austin Motel

The old Don-Mar Motor Court was torn down back in 2005, and condos are set to fill the empty space. Maybe they will leave the sign up? I was very pleased and surprised to find it still stood.

Genitalia on Angelina's chin...

...please, let me explain.

history of lufkin mural II
Sometime over the weekend, one of the less...enlightened citizens of nearby Lufkin decided Angelina would look better if she had male genitalia spray painted onto her chin. I disagree with this particular aesthetic modification. It will cost the city of Lufkin around $1,500 to restore. Monday night, police found a similar, erotic work of art on the south side (yo) of L-Town, so maybe they'll catch the artist. Speaking of which, muralist Lance Hunter painted this, and other, murals in 1991. These are some of the others in downtown Lufkin. I see several other places where genitalia could be added.

It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma!

tin foil caps
Found on the SFASU campus, Saturday morning

"Take off the blinders

Google: Larry Silverstien owner of the Word Trade Centers. Admitted on PBS that WTC 7 was brought down by a controlled demolition."

I'm not sure what the point of the chalk writer is exactly, but this site appears to back it up. You may want to don your tinfoil cap before clicking on the link, though.

Speaking of 9/11:

Wings fan in Lufkin

Apparently, the owner of this construction company in Lufkin has an interesting approach to the use of its marquee. I spotted this Wednesday morning and did a double take. I'm befuddled by the message (which was on both sides of the sign). Is it a tribute to the 1975 Paul McCartney and Wings album, Venus and Mars? What else could it be? I'll check it in a week or so to see what's there.....

Dry cleaning and sooo much more

I take back what I posted a few months ago when they did this before. Clearly it is humorously intentioned. Although, I've heard the owner of Banita Cleaners in Nac is of the Pentecostal faith, and, as I said last time, East Texas can be a narrowly conservative place. Again, maybe it's just me. Is it??...

Identity crisis?

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things does not belong...
Yeah, it's blurry...you drive 70, while trying to stay close to a car in front of you, as you attempt to hold a camera steady. I'm guessing you'd get a result similar to mine.

Ronald McHummer

Ronald McHummer, a site where people can create their own McDonald's marquee message. Heh.

Of course, sometimes they don't need any help:

But seriously, despite being a runner and somewhat of a health nut, I like the food at McDonald's as much as the next, average schmo. But we'd probably be better off if they all looked like this one in Nacogdoches:

Friday pop quiz

I'd most likely not even have given this much thought, if not for the fact the driver of this SUV had me pinned in the right lane for several miles. In other words, she was playing that little game wherein the driver in the passing lane (the SUV) prevents the driver in the right lane (me) from maneuvering around slower cars in the right lane due to an oddly inconsistent level of speed. At the very moment I could have gotten around her (in the SUV), she chose those moments to speed up, thereby preventing my passing her. One would think people do that on purpose. But surely they don't....do they?? Why would they?

The point is, I had ample time (I was forced really) to study the various elements of the sign on the back of her SUV, and the cryptic message it broadcasts.

WTF?

Okay, clearly the HE is God, but I must admit the yellow ribbons sort of confounded me. Is the "HIM"?:

a. U.S. troops stationed in Iraq
b. Tiny, just born, 3 pound, 6 ounces, never spoken a word Jesus
c. George W. Bush
d. Pete Doherty
e. humanity
f. none of the above

If only I knew then...

It says "Minor in Film Studies at SFA/18 credit hours of film!"

I'm sure there were courses like this when I was in college, but why wasn't I aware of them??? Damnit!

    How Hard Could It Be?

Minnesota got to elect Jesse "The Body" Ventura, and Cahl-lee-for-nea has Ahnold. Down in Texas, shouldn't it be our turn to put somebody wacky into the governor's mansion?

If I didn't have to work, I'd go!

In my opinion, Friedman has less of a chance of beating current governor,
Rick Perry (a good example of a person who is a successful politician due primarily to their perfect hair), than our current State Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander. I think she has a good chance, and I'll probably end up voting for her. White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan is Rylander's son.

I hate to say it, but a vote for Kinky Friedman will probably be a wasted one. I like him, and I've seen him on Imus several times. It would be nice to have someone as progressive and willing to think outside of the box as Friedman. School funding, for one thing, is a real mess down here. But I just don't think the majority of voters in Texas are ready for him. That's too bad.

While nothing like the blast of cold air they received on the East Coast, we got down to 21° here in Nacognowhere on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

    T. J. Eckleburg

"But above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic—their irises are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose."

The Great Gatsby (chapter 2) by F. Scott Fitzgerald
