Ricou Browning aka The Creature From The Black Lagoon who directed the scene told me the following at a Wonderfest in Louisville, Kentucky. Sinatra talked a stripper at a local bar into doing the scene. The sharks were kept in cages until the filming started. There failure to be able to move kept them in a drowsy state. Divers watched the sharks and held them back by their tales to keep them in a drowsy state while they shot the scene. Their inability to move kept them in a trance type state. I am sure glad I was not one of those divers.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08708308543411603294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14231278.post-75826357171656128302020-05-28T23:46:22.062-05:002020-05-28T23:46:22.062-05:00Nice article, good attention to detail, Charley. I've got a huge collection of his things including matches & glasses from Christina 2 & a jacket from Christina 1 (his yacht) also named after Frank's daughter, Tina. I love the piece, but I do differ on one point, that the inmates didn't dig the band. They weren't all young guys & Count Basie with Q as the conductor was the hardest swinging jazz band on the planet. You can see the people clapping & stomping in time. Frank was the only white guy performing, so it wasn't like Bing Crosby or Pat Boone with generic accompaniment trying to be hip. I saw the original Sinatra special with Walter Cronkite when it aired (I was about 6) and later always wondered what song Frank & Bill Miller (Suntan Charlie) were rehearsing. Great catch on that. If you look closely there are a few old-time showbiz guys at Jilly's. I think Allan King. Frank, of course, is sitting between his daughters Nancy Jr. & his youngest, Tina. Good job & keep up the good work.Biff O'Harahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08860397215727505066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14231278.post-66711594344354186042019-05-16T11:56:34.719-05:002019-05-16T11:56:34.719-05:00Showbiz Al's Love Machine wants to hang at Jil...Showbiz Al's Love Machine wants to hang at Jilly's. I think it was the summer of 1970. I was 19 at the time. I might have seen it before then in an indoor theater but I do not specifically recall. It ranks as one of my favorite movies. Seeing the still frames from the movie and looking at the American small town landscape of that time makes me actually physically ache in a bittersweet sort of way. I think it is a combination of pleasant sentimentality and a sadness from the evidence of the passing of time... an old, long-gone motel with a '59 Ford passing by on the highway on a sunny day. I have no doubt that he was likely a well known, liked and self assured gentleman, because he seemed so self possessed of himself even as a small child.
